Slider the Turtle

Last week we read a story about a cat who turned into a library cat.  This started all kinds of animals stories. In the end one of our students decided he needed to bring in his turtle and share it with the students.  So for the remainder of this week we have a library turtle.  I’m not sure how much work he will help me with, but he is a fascination to the students. Thanks for sharing with us Gavin.

Reading Opportunities for 3rd Grade

Last year I decided to start a reading program for the third grade students.  I wanted to get them interested in reading chapter books. So I came up with the “Third Grade Picks”.  The students are encouraged to read atleast ten books from a  list of twenty books.  The books are on several different ability levels to  reach all students that want to participate.  The student reads the book then fills out a questionaire sheet that is returned to me.  Their name is placed on the board in the library with a sticker to show their progress.  At the end of the year those who read eight or more books will be invited to a pizza party to celebrate their effort.  So  encourage your child to start reading!!!

Welcome Back

Welcome Back!! I always get excited for the beginning of school to start.  There are so many new things each year.  I am looking forward to meeting the new parents and their children.  Willard South is so fortunate to have an outstanding library.  I am here to help your child find good books to read at their reading level.  In grades 2-4, they are required to choose a book at their reading level and another book of any thing they like. Your child will visit the library the same day each week.  This helps them get in the habit of returning their books on time.  If I can be of help, don’t hesitate to stop by or drop me an e-mail.

Show Me Nominee Books

Each year students vote on their favorite Show-Me Nominee.  There are ten books that are chosen by a group of librarians as “should read” books.  Students in grade 1-3 are eligible to vote for their favorite Show-Me book.  The purpose of the Show-Me Readers is to promote literacy and interest in reading.

Our voting concluded this week and these are the results:

Badger’s Fancy Meal – 4 votes

The Boy Who Was Raised by Librarians – 18 votes

Callie Cat, Ice Skater – 14 votes

Hair for Mama – 22 votes

Jack’s Talent – 2 votes

Old House -  37 votes

One Thousand Tracings – 21 votes

Orange Shoes – 27 votes

Snow Day – 4 votes

Vinnie and Abraham – 12 votes

Some Dog – 36 votes

The winner at Willard South Elementary is The Old House with 37 votes.  I look forward to hearing who the official winners is out of all the students in grades 1-3 in Missouri.
